February is often seen as a romantic month with loved-up people the world over spending exorbitant amounts of money on Valentines Day flowers, cards, dinners out and gifts for their significant other. For many audiophiles though, the love of their life is not made of flesh and blood but has an aircraft-grade aluminium chassis, a nice set of beryllium tweeters and carbon fibre curves…one thing they do have in common with a human love, is they certainly get plenty of cash lavished on them. Linette Smith gives her final round up of what a Bird’s Eye View of the Hifi world has been like in 2016.
A couple of things struck me when we started Hifi Pig and I got involved with going to Hifi Shows and talking to other like-minded people on the interwebs. Those things were that, firstly, there didn’t seem to be a lot of women around and secondly that everyone involved was ‘of a certain age’. That was five years ago and things are changing. Every show we go to I see more women and we are starting to see a younger audience in attendance. Which is how it should be. When it comes down to it, Hifi is about music and music is “a universal language, spoken and understood by all” (OK, that quote relates to House Music…but you get my drift). More »

Linette Smith looks at fame and the reasons people become, or want to become, famous.
With Stuart writing extensively about taste recently, and, having touched on the subject of hifi looks and beauty myself in previous articles, I got to thinking about how a hifi’s looks have a bearing on how it sounds, or how we perceive it sounds. For me, hifi systems fall into three main categories looks wise. More »

Linette Smith takes a look into her crystal ball and see’s if she can pluck out some trends for 2016 out of the swirling mists.
This is not really the article that I was going to write this month, but things changed in Paris on Friday the 13th of November 2015. We are setting off to visit the Haute Fidelité Show at the Marriott Rive Gauche in Paris. I’m not entirely sure how I am feeling, a mixture of anger and defiance, but also sadness and admittedly fear.
Linette gets that Christmas morning feeling and a girl crush…or does she?
“I have a confession to make. I have a bit of a girl crush on Alex Polizzi…..no, not like that, put away your filthy minds….I mean I’d like to be her friend, hang out with her a bit, I think she’s really cool”.
While we are on the subject, if you guys really want us women to join in more on audiophile/hifi forums and groups, please, just put it away will you? I remember being at school in the 70s and the boys would be frequently shrieked at, by irate teachers, for having competitions to see who could wee the highest up a wall. This obviously proved that they were highly masculine so when they grew up they continued to apply this ‘rampant masculinity’ and ‘willy waving’ technique to their hifi…
Why HiFi Shows Are The Lifeblood Of The Industry
OR WHY THE SEE IT, HEAR IT, TOUCH IT HIFI SHOW EXPERIENCE SHOULD BE ON YOUR BUCKET LIST
As I write this it is early September 2023, I am looking back on what a busy year it has been, and there is still over a quarter of it left. It seems a while since I had the chance to sit down and write a piece that wasn’t either HiFi News or a HiFi Show Report and that is basically because our feet have barely touched the ground this year.
