Dan D’Agostino Master Audio Systems has released the new Momentum C2 Preamplifier. Short for “Concept 2,” the Dan D’Agostino Momentum C2 Preamplifier has been designed as a “significant advancement” on its predecessor, the Momentum HD Preamplifier.

Expanding on the framework of the Momentum Preamplifier platform, the Momentum C2 incorporates technical features and sonic attributes inspired by the flagship Relentless Preamplifier.

The preamplifier employs a dual-chassis design, separating the audio circuitry from the power supply to ensure optimal mechanical and electrical isolation. This setup is intended to improve sound quality by reducing interference and noise.

DESIGN AND CIRCUITRY

The Momentum C2 Preamplifier utilises a dedicated audio chassis and a separate power supply, connected by specialised gold-plated, 30-pin interlocking connectors capable of handling 20 amps. This configuration isolates the audio signal both physically and electrically from the power supply, optimising space for power and audio circuitry enhancements.

The audio circuitry features an innovative topology based on four JFET transistors in a complementary push-pull design, which significantly improves input impedance and reduces noise. The preamplifier’s input stage can handle a high voltage input signal of up to 30 volts, ensuring that the device is resistant to electrical issues from connected sources. A unique circuit has been developed to maintain stable bias, mitigating performance degradation caused by temperature fluctuations during extended use.

D’Agostino’s design is said to eliminate negative feedback throughout the signal path, which remains fully complementary, direct-coupled, and balanced from input to output. The device has a frequency response flat up to 120 kHz. Signal gain is achieved through proprietary multiple-output current mirrors, delivering 30 times the linearity of other designs. The use of four-layer circuit boards further enhances signal quality and reduces distortion compared to conventional two-layer boards.

POWER SUPPLY AND DIGITAL FEATURES

The power supply, housed in a separate chassis, uses individual transformers for analogue and digital circuits to minimise interference. The design, inspired by the Momentum M400 amplifier, employs a unique winding technology to increase power output. Enhanced internal circuitry addresses RF noise, compensates for asymmetric power waveforms, and eliminates DC on the mains. The output stages operate at a 36% higher voltage, improving dynamic range.

A key feature of the Momentum C2 is its optional Digital Streaming Module (DSM), which adds advanced digital capabilities. The DSM includes various inputs, such as SPDIF coaxial, optical, USB-B, RJ45, and Wi-Fi, and supports high-resolution playback through 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet. The module is Roon Ready certified and integrates with streaming services like Tidal, Qobuz, and Spotify. It can decode PCM signals up to 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD signals up to DSD256 (11.2MHz).

CONTROL AND USABILITY

The preamplifier comes with a new two-way remote control that features Bluetooth connectivity, an ergonomic design, and an LCD screen. This remote mirrors the information displayed on the preamplifier’s front panel, including input, volume, and balance settings. Additionally, it can display song metadata when the DSM is installed.

The Momentum C2 also features a volume control system using 14 components for each control to ensure smooth response and precise handling of volume levels. A headphone jack with independent amplifier circuitry is included, enhancing the device’s versatility.
