In the first three months of 2011 just over 20 million CDs were sold in the UK, but this figure dropped to 15.3 million in 2012 – a drop of 25%. Sales of vinyl in the UK experienced growth in 2011 of almost 40% over 2010 figures but still only account for 19.5% of non-download sales. In 2011, according to IFPI, worldwide sales of downloaded singles and albums rose by 17% with some countries (US and S.Korea) deriving over half of their sales of music from downloaded sources. IFPI estimates that 32% of record companies’ revenues are derived from digital channels. More »

Sony SS-AR1 is a 57Kg, $27 000 loudspeaker that up until now has not been available in Europe. This scenario looks set to change as the company have been demonstrating the loudspeakers at this years Munich High End event to German dealers.

The SS-AR1 is predominantly a wooden loudspeaker with the baffles being sourced from the Japanese island of Hokkaido, where cold winters are reflected in the incredibly tight grain of the wood. Finnish birch is used for the side and rear panels.

Construction of the loudspeaker is meticulous and the design of the SS-AR1 is such that it helps control resonances – essentially the cabinet is two separate enclosures; one for the woofers and the other for the mids and tweeters. Each of these sub enclosures is bass reflex ported.

Drivers are sourced from Scandinavia and include twin 200mm aluminium woofers, a 130mm midrange unit (which incorporates a sliced paper cone to help suppress any resonance) and a 25mm soft dome tweeter.

Nagra, the Swiss company long associated with the Montreaux Jazz Festival, have announced, at the Munich High End show, that they will introduce the Nagra Jazz preamplifier. Giving the preamplifier a name is something of a departure for the company, but the same compact size as other Nagra preamplifiers such as the PL-L and PL-P is maintained.

More details as soon as we have them.

Lampizator have announced that as of next week all their DACs that come equipped with a remote volume will have remote controlled switching of digital inputs too. There will be no price increase.  There will be a retrofit package available as a kit for 100€ and DACs which are sent to Lampizator for upgrades or repairs of any kind can have this installed whilst the unit is with them. Lampizator also say you can do the retrofit yourselves with their simple manual and that only a soldering iron is needed.

Also starting May 1 Lampizator will introduce a “300B” DAC with the tubes exposed on the top of the unit. The Lampizator press release says “The tubes will be three kinds from “300B family” – 300B, 2A3 and 45 and the two 5u3 rectifiers will be exposed too. With this DAC there will be a choice of newest TDA1541A dac, the old 5/9 board or the new Level 5  “553” board”. The 300B DAC price will be listed at 4000€.

KEF has announced the introduction of its new LS50 Mini Monitor speaker; a concept derived from the legendary LS3/5a and designed to bring professional studio monitor concept into the home.

The LS50 monitor is claimed to deliver a “rich, multi-dimensional ‘soundstage experience’ that is out of all proportion to its size.”

Patent-pending acoustic designs, together with technologies from KEF’s latest flagship Blade loudspeaker, provide a “studio experience – even in the smallest of spaces”.

At the LS50’s heart beats the highly acclaimed KEF Uni-Q driver array, capable of mastering an exceptional range of dynamic highs and lows over a large listening area.

The cabinet features constrained layer damping to reduce resonances in comparison to regular damping pads, while the baffle  shape has been optimised for smooth on and off-axis dispersion as well as incorporating a ribbed rear surface to reduce cavity resonance at the rear of the driver.

The port has been optimised using computational fluid dynamics to offer lower turbulence at high levels.

The KEF LS50 comes is high gloss piano black cabinet with rose gold Uni-Q driver. Recommended retail price is £800.00 per pair.

Founded in 2000, the Chicago (US) based company CEntrance develops innovative audio entertainment products and licenses its technology to industry brands, such as Playback Designs, Bel Canto, Benchmark, PS Audio, and Lavry.

CEntrance will be demonstrating their “Audiophile Desktop System” at this year’s Munich High End show and very interesting it looks too. The system packs a stereo pair of “MasterClass™ 2504” desktop 2-way coaxial speakers and the “DACmini™ PX” desktop amplifier, headphone amp and DAC.

The bundle also includes a travel case with custom foam cushioning as well as speaker and USB cables.

The Audiophile Desktop System was designed from the ground up to bring Hi-Fi sound straight to the desktop for today’s Internet-connected consumers. The DAC, amp, speakers and cables are closely matched and voiced to work together perfectly. The system provides a complete digital audio listening solution for $2,000 USD and is available for ordering now.

Michael Goodman, Managing Director of CEntrance – “We have tuned this system for performance and it offers superior results than ad-hoc collections of components from several manufacturers. We’re confident that the new Audiophile Desktop System will turn some heads and ears.”

Hifi Pig hopes to have one for review soon.

NOLA will debut the Grand Reference VI (Pictured) at the upcoming 2012 Munich Hi End Show. This 4 tower system is the flagship model from New York State (US) based Nola and now incorporates Unison Crossover Technology so one pair of mono block amplifiers or one stereo amplifier can drive all four towers. Drive units have been upgraded to reduce moving mass and increase speed across the board. Nola say that “This system is considered by many to be the finest loudspeaker system available.”

NOLA will also debut, in conjunction with Upscale Audio, the KO Loudspeaker at The Show Newport Beach on June 1-3. KO is the top of the company’s Boxer collection and incorporates state of the art NOLA Reference Series concepts at a much more affordable price. Utilizing the company’s mirror-imaged short line source open baffle array the KO can fill medium to large rooms with ease, while providing “very high sound quality”. The KO loudspeaker from Nola employs four 4½” open baffle dipole midranges, four 1″  silk dome tweeters and 2 cast-frame aluminum cone bass drivers in separate ported chambers. A 90 dB sensitivity combined with an 8 ohm impedance allows KO to be driven by a large selection of amplifiers, including valves. New Unison Crossover Technology provides improved power utilization for higher effective efficiency. KO is available in Piano Cherry or Piano Black.

Not strictly home hifi but interesting news none the less:Minnesota (US) based Remote Technologies Incorporated (RTI) have announced that the company is now shipping its new four-channel CP-450 and 16-channel CP-1650 audio amplifiers. Designed as the perfect complements to RTI’s eight-zone AD-8 distributed audio system, these powerful new amplifiers provide an additional 50 W per channel to extend speaker outputs in larger installations.

“Our AD-8 distributed audio system provides 25 W per channel, which is ideal for most installations, but larger rooms and subzones might require more speakers and more power,” said Pete Baker, vice president of sales and marketing for RTI. “We are pleased to offer our dealers a powerful, cost-effective solution to this installation issue with our new CP-450 and CP-1650 amplifiers.”  More »
