The Technics 1210 turntable has for many years been a favourite with radio and club DJs but in recent years it has also Technics 1210become popular with audiophiles who modify the standard deck to greater or lesser degrees.

Here Hifi Pig look at some fairly simple modifications to the stock turntable all provided by the guys at Origin Live.

“The original Technics 1200 turntable was introduced by Matsushita in October of 1972 as a domestic record player but was quickly adopted by radio and club Djs. The SL-1210MKII (the turntable used here) was launched in 1979 with various upgrades and new models since then being introduced. Over three million of the 1200 series turntables have been sold. I like the 1210 for its rock steady pitch which to my ears gives a nice and solid feel to the music, though others have called the turntable “dark”.”

Following the recent launch of the Crimson, Cobra and Chameleon interconnects in the entry-level sector, The Chord Chord_SarsenCompany has expanded its affordable product line with a new speaker cable, Sarsen, priced at £8p/m.

The new Sarsen speaker cable is The Chord Company’s most discreet cable design to date. A speaker cable that’s hard to see, but easy to hear, Sarsen is miniaturised wire that uses established Chord Company design principles to produce a small cable. It’s narrow diameter and flexible nature enables Sarsen to be used in a multitude of applications where space and concealment are priorities.

Sarsen’s mix of materials has a diameter of less than 4mm, its conductors are built from multi-stranded oxygen free copper and, like other Chord Company speaker cables, are arranged in a twisted pair configuration.

The Sarsen cable uses FEP insulation, which is a form of PTFE. The two conductors are then covered with a PVC outer jacket.

Schiit Audio, whose Modi DAC and Magni headphone amplifier we recently reviewed, and  announce the availability of its loki ad graphic ALT2new Loki DSD companion DAC, which allows anyone to add DSD playback to any DAC for $149

“Customers have been asking for DSD in our DACs,” said Mike Moffat, Co-Founder of Schiit Audio. “But in our opinion, DSD and PCM playback should not be shared on the same analogue stage. The filtering requirements of DSD are drastically different. Because of this, we chose to offer DSD as a separate, dedicated DSD-only box with pass-through switching, so it can simply be added to any DAC.”

Mike emphasized “any DAC.” Loki is not limited to working with Schiit’s Modi, Bifrost, and Gungnir DACs–it works as a companion to any DAC that has RCA output.

Loki decodes DSD 1X using the DoP spec and proprietary Schiit firmware on a Microchip PIC controller to provide bit-perfect DSD native playback with a variety of music players on both the PC and Mac platforms. It connects to any PC or Mac via USB, and is powered by the USB bus.

Meridian has previewed their 3D in-car surround system built in the Jaguar C-X17. Meridian have developed and jag-1designed their innovative car audio system in close conjunction with Jaguar’s C-X17’s interior to provide a “unique harmonic space”.

The 28 loudspeaker system presents innovative loudspeaker locations within the vehicle cabin such as the integration of loudspeakers into the A & B pillars. The Meridian’s subwoofer “force cancelling” technology has been gem-set within the rear centre tunnel; ultimately the raised loudspeakers have been located in the top of the head restraints to deliver the correct perception of image height.

“The all-new sonic architecture allows Meridian’s DSP technology to further exploit its full capabilities of delivering authentic, evocative and believable sound for everyone. A jewel of sound specifically created for the Jaguar C-X17.” Graham Landick, Meridian Automotive Programme Manager.

“The Meridian audio system for the C-X17 is an audio statement. Inspired by the design and performance of Meridian home systems and technologies, this system represents the future of in-car 3D surround. It is very satisfying to see two great British brands blend together their design languages and technologies to produce something unique.” Bob Stuart, Meridian Co-founder and Chief Technical Officer.

Valve Audio Devices (VAD) launches DAC-10 British newcomer to the high-end audio scene has released its new VAD_DAC10_Silver_Frontvlave based DAC.

VAD’s first product is a dual mono design based around VAD’s own 24bit dual DAC circuitry, which is coupled to its bespoke designed triode valve analogue stage. The DAC-10 features RCA COAX, BNC, TOSlink optical and AES/EBU (standard model only) inputs. DSD connectivity is included via a separate USB connection in the DAC-10 DSD, in place of the AES/EBU socket on the standard model.

Based on VAD’s own ‘Sound Pure Design’, both models of the DAC-10 feature virtual signal pass through circuits, with zero low-pass or high-pass filtering in the audio frequency range or any up-sampling in the digital domain.  The SPDIF digital processing includes a HF Triode valve in its circuit and the built-in 32-bit/192kHz asynchronous USB is connected via i2S transmission standard, for the very purest data transmission possible.

The triode valve analogue output stage operates in pure Class A and is point-to-point engineered. Featuring NOS (New Old Stock) valves, the stage consists of a pair of 6SN7 drivers, a pair of CV574 rectifiers and a pair of 6N6P double triode valves, all of which have been selected and matched. To personalise the sound, VAD encourages experienced users to ‘valve roll’ the 6SN7 drivers and CV574 rectifiers to suit and is happy to recommend alternatives based on a users tonal preference.Wired in pure Class A, output is via a stereo pair of RCA single-ended and XLR balanced analogue outputs.

A specially designed direct-coupled remote-controlled analogue gain control is fitted to the front panel to accurately match to your preamplifier. For digital-only systems, this gain control can also facilitate direct connection to power amplifiers.

VAD has paid particular attention by not only separating out the digital and analogue power supply sections but alsoVAD_Valve_detail the left and right channels. All power supplies are designed for the specific application, are choke loaded and feature inductors, polymer and film capacitors and ‘series’ resistor-less components.

VAD’s casework is designed as a monocoque structure with the aim of giving the circuitry an extremely high mechanical rigid base, EMI & RFI screening and vibration damping. Polymer coated with additionally polyurethane to ‘silence’ it from any mechanical ringing, the only structural parts fitted with screws are the aluminium top cover and removable valve cover. It is also directly fully grounded via the safety `earth` pin in the fused IEC socket.

Each unit is soak tested for 24 hours prior to shipping and VAD is so confident with the reliability of its products, that it issues a seven-year guarantee from date of purchase.

The DSD (Direct Stream Digital) module in the DAC-10 DSD replaces the AES-EBU socket of the standard model with an additional USB socket dedicated to DSD playback.

The DSD circuitry is retro-fitable to those wanting to upgrade DAC-10 PCM-only DAC’s in the future.

We’ve been using one of the early versions of the DAC here for some time now and have been enjoying it a great deal!

The Valve Audio Devices (VAD) DAC-10 is available in both versions now, with the standard DAC-10 having a UK SRP of £6499.00 and the DAC-10 DSD at £6999.00

Available from October the new loudspeaker from Focal will feature a Flax cone, new TNF tweeters and minimalist Focal_1styled cabinets.

It represents a significant design shift away from the Chorus 800 V’s very strong design identity towards a more sober statement combining the mineral and the organic. The Aria 900 range is similar in breadth to that of the Chorus 800 V for stereo and Home Cinema, with just one exception: the model 948, which marks a return to the original “generous” loudspeaker with two 21 cm bass speakers.

Eighteen years after Focal introduced its ‘W’ sandwich cones (glass-glass sandwich), it is launching its ‘F’ (for Flax) sandwich cones, the result of more than five years’ work towards achieving more affordable sandwich structures.

The use of an eco-textile like flax, together with composites technologies, brings an innovative solution to sandwich construction: a piece of high quality flax is placed between two very thin glass fibre sheets. The manufacturing process can be mechanized (unlike the W cones which had to be handmade) and automated, making them more affordable.

The new TNF tweeter has an aluminium/magnesium alloy inverted dome, for low mass and stiffness. The lightweight dome is supported on Poron suspension (for linearity) developed from the Utopia tweeter. The tweeter has a front plate waveguide to help ensure ideal horizontal directivity with low diffraction.

“It costs ten bucks or go fuck yourself”.

A nice personable accompaniment for the album’s release from Trent Reznor himself. He’s obviously not terribly fond of  the “pay what you want” system as championed by Radiohead… never mind Trent, thousands upon thousands of people will pay absolutely nothing besides a bit of bandwidth for it.

Anyway, the current state of music retail notwithstanding, this is NIN’s 8th release and the first since 2008′s ‘The Slip’ and depending on who you talk to, the first with any merit since 2005′s ‘With Teeth”.  A lot of water has cascaded under many bridges in that time though.  Reznor and co-conspirator Atticus Ross (who co-produced this very album) have become Hollywood darlings, winning numerous awards for their collaborative film scores.  So much so that the very existence of NIN appeared to be quite nebulous and Reznor has surprised many with the announcement of this full length offering.
