BØRRESEN X3 LOUDSPEAKER IS NOW AVAILABLE
Teased at a couple of shows last year, the new Børresen X3 Loudspeaker is ready to make its way into the homes and listening rooms of Børresen fans around the world, at a price point not seen before from the Danish brand.
The new Børresen X3 Loudspeaker is a loudspeaker with all the characteristic Børresen features and, says the Danish brand, “a revolution in quality, performance and price”.
BØRRESEN X3 LOUDSPEAKER
Audio Group Denmark tells us that the new Børresen X3 loudspeaker marks the creation of a completely new entry-level into the Børresen loudspeaker universe, we have seen and heard other new products in this new entry level and have been very impressed, we will tell you more when we can.
The Børresen X3 has been designed on the solid foundation of Børresen Acoustics’ development traditions, design philosophy and technological know-how.
You can read more about the X3 from when we heard it during our recent visit to Audio Group Denmark, here.
A NEW ENTRY LEVEL
The biggest challenge for the Børresen engineering team was to create an entry-level Børresen loudspeaker that was more affordable, yet still had the typical Børresen DNA and quality standard. To do this, they had to figure out which technologies and components from existing speaker models would have the greatest impact on sound performance and also guarantee the well-known Børresen qualities. The next task was then to find out how to make such a loudspeaker more cost-effective.
The result of this development and design process is a high-quality loudspeaker with all the outstanding acoustic properties of the Børresen M, 0 and Z series. The Børresen X3 loudspeaker is not only a new entry-level speaker into the Børresen universe, but wec are sure it will shake things up with its quality and performance in its price range.
X-SERIES MEMBRANE
To ensure the typical Børresen characteristics in the X3 loudspeaker, Michael Børresen and his team of designers and engineers were able to draw on the development process and technology of the newly created Børresen M1 membrane.
This membrane is designed to achieve maximum stiffness with minimum noise. The technological requirements for this membrane performance made it necessary to design, develop and assemble all components in-house. Michael Børresen and his team designed many different variations and models until they finally achieved their goal. The result is the X3 membrane that consists of three skins laminated into a single unit: two layers of spread carbon fibre, with a layer of aramid honeycomb spacers in between.
The combination of these materials gives this membrane its unique properties. The spread-tow carbon fibre was designed to provide a skin with optimal stiffness. This unique feature of the membrane reduces sound-disturbing vibrations and resonances. The aramid honeycomb also has the best stiffness-to-weight ratio in the vertical direction. A flat response membrane in terms of resonances paved the way to build a very transparent loudspeaker with a reduced size of the magnetic motor system to optimise costs.
THE MAGNETIC MOTOR SYSTEM
In the X3 magnet motor system, Børresen uses double copper caps on the pole rings to achieve high flux and low inductance. The use of copper caps has been adopted from the Børresen Z-series. Audio Group Denmark says they have found that copper produces a response to flux changes – the better the counter-effect of these copper rings, the flatter the inductance curve, and the lower the electro-magnetic resonance. In addition, lower inductance also means fewer spikes in the impedance curve. Both result in a lower load on the amplifier. To ensure high efficiency, the X3 has two pole rings. This causes the loss of some flux, which reduces efficiency, but this is compensated for by a larger magnet.
BØRRESEN X3 TWEETER
The tweeter chosen for the Børresen X3 has the same design used in all other Børresen loudspeaker series. However, there is a reduction in magnet and iron mass. This is possible due to the extremely high efficiency of the original tweeter design. As a result, the efficiency has dropped only slightly from 94 dB to 88 dB.
The tweeter operates from about 2.5 kHz upwards. The moving mass is low at 0.01 grams. The fully concealed tweeter can operate at speed. The high robustness of this tweeter allows it to handle very high transients without causing any deafening dips.
CROSSOVER
The Børresen X3 is equipped with a parallel crossover built with the same high-quality components from the Z Series, to minimise resonance.
BØRRESEN X3 CABINET
The surface of the cabinet is finished in black or white piano lacquer and reinforced with optical carbon fibre inserts. The cabinet is made of a heavily braced wood composite material that has the property of eliminating sound distortion. The material used for the cabinet is said to also reduces mechanical influences, especially hysteresis. The Børresen X3 cabinet has six bass reflex ports. The tweeter is vented to compensate for the air pressure that builds up. The bass section consists of tuned ports calibrated for musically relevant frequencies.
