Lauren Coombes interviews four piece indie rock band, Miss Lucid.
Behind The Instruments: Miss Lucid
Quick Intro: (Just names and role in the group)
– Ciaran McGowan: Vocals, guitars.
– Kev Smith : Bass, vocals
– Paul Jamieson: Drums
– Mike Chang: Guitars, vocals
How/when did you guys meet?
– In school, pretty much. I went to Primary School with Mike, then we rekindled our affair when we are about 16, along with this strapping gentleman, Kev. The band I was in at the time was renting a small practice space, and they were looking for a place to use, so we shared it. Being from a small fishing town, it was inevitable that we would move on the big lights of the city, where we met Paul through different bands. So, when we started writing music together, it just felt completely natural. (CT)
How long have you been playing music together for?
– Hard one to answer really. Miss Lucid has existed for around 4/5 years, but you could go back probably 15 years in total. Depends how you define playing music together… (CT)
How would you describe your sound?
– I don’t really know. It’s a tough question to answer. I don’t think we ever have a preconceived idea of what a song is going to sound like. We all bring our own different parts together, it can be really quite fluid writing sometimes. But essentially, it’s based around the idea of the melody…And a tight as f*ck rhythm section. (CT)
What/who are your musical influences?
– We’re a mixed bag, so anything from Earth, Wind & Fire, Oceansize, The Clash, The Smiths and Coolio, to Radiohead, The 1975, Mansun, Queens of the Stoneage, RX Bandits, The Blue Nile, Circa Survive, As Tall As Lions. The list is tooooo long! All these different sonics seem to mush quite nicely, into what music we make as Miss Lucid. They all have heart too, and that’s important. (MC)
What’s your favourite track you’ve written/recorded so far?
– To be honest, it’s kind of like asking a parent who his or her favourite child is…we all know they have one, they’re just never going to admit it.. (CT)
What has been the best moment so far?
– Getting that test pressing of our debut album and listening to it on my record player! Can’t wait to let people hear it. (MC)
– Yeah, seeing that physical, tangible thing, in my hand, was a pretty good feeling. (CT)
What has been the worst/hardest moment so far?
– When we lost our best friend
With the new album coming out soon, which sounds great, what’s next on ‘the list’ for you guys? (E.g. a break, straight into writing again etc.)
– To play as many shows as we can this year, taking this album as far and wide as possible. Hopefully we can engage with our audience and build on this, release another single and so some cool shit. (MC)
– We just want to keep active. The whole idea is to keep the momentum going after the album, We’re going to release singles, but with some of the songs we’ve written over the last 4 or 5 years as b-sides. Almost like when you used to go buy a single on CD, they are kind of like little EP’s. They are songs are worthy of releasing, but just never fitting into the flow of the album. Then, hopefully we can think about releasing a follow up album later next year. (CT)
Thanks for doing this guys it will be great for the review! Much appreciation!
