Bristol will shortly see the opening of its first audiophile bar and kitchen. The brains behind it are; Dan Wild, who has run Bristol institutional club event Just Jack for 12 years (predominantly at Motion), his wife Rhiannon and their head chef Michiel Pel.

The concept, although new to Bristol certainly isn’t a new one. Audiophile bars have been an integral part of Tokyo’s food and drinks scene for many years, and have have recently come to London, most notably in the form of King Cross’s ‘Spiritland’, which Hifi Pig visited recently, and East London’s ‘Brilliant Corners’. The experience of enjoying food, drink and good conversation with your friends whilst listening to music on a beautiful sound system, made perfect sense to Dan and Rhiannon, and hence why they have decided to bring their version of this concept to Bristol.

The sound system comes from, American company, Klipsch’s ‘heritage’ range of audiophile speakers, still manufactured to the same exacting standards and designs that made them David Mancuso’s go to speakers for his infamous parties at ‘The Loft’ in 1970’s New York. Combined with hand built tube amplifiers and a rotary DJ mixer from Alpha Recording Systems, visitors to Edit will be in for ‘an audio experience which has its emphasis fully focused on sound quality and not on volume’.

The table service bar and kitchen, occupies a space close to the arches on Cheltenham road which was previously occupied by the ‘Amici’ Italian restaurant. The food is based around innovative Asian small plates…. dumplings and salads, meat and fish dishes, will be accompanied by an extensive Sake menu along with wines, cocktails, and a list of home made non alcoholic drinks and infusions designed to compliment the menu.

DJs will play Thursdays to Sundays. They will be playing minimum 6 hour sets, allowing them to dig deep into their record bags and take the listeners on a journey through Ambient, Jazz, Electronica, Funk, Soul and World Music from the four corners of the earth. Alongside an exiting schedule of guest DJs handpicked by Dan. Edit also already has some formidable residents who will regularly be providing the music. These include, Dan Wild, Banoffee Pies, Jess Farley from Rhythm Sister, The Centre for Better Grooves (who’s record shop on Cranbrook road is a mecca for more obscure sounds from around the world), and Beattie from Restless nights. Whilst many people may associate these DJ’s with more dance floor orientated music, Edit say they will give them the opportunity to dig deep and take the crowd through the more eclectic, sounds that reside in these DJ’s personal collections that many people don’t ever get to hear.

Hifi Pig will be visiting Edit early next year for a snoofle around!
