Half the Perfect World – Madeleine Pyroux

Rounder Records Corp:0602517032798

Author – Paul
Laid back romantic jazz songs from Madeleine Peyroux.  For those not familiar with her, Madeleine was born in Athens, Georgia, growing up between Brooklyn, California and Paris, where she later shot to fame on the Paris Jazz scene.
In this album Madeleine sings with great sophistication and each track is a laid back masterpiece of hypnotic songs that draw the listener in.  It’s very compelling stuff, relaxed and helped by some good production.  She’s been described by music critics as “smokey voiced” and “sublime” in her delivery, and manages to wrap her voice around the lyrics enveloping the music in a very accomplished way.  This album is reminiscent of the late great Billie Holiday, indeed Billie was a huge influence on Madeleine and her singing style.  Think “modern day Billie Holiday” and you’ve captured Madeleine’s voice perfectly.
Twelve tracks total with track 5.  “River” featuring k.d.lang.  Perfect for late night relaxation with a glass of wine or two.
