LEAK REVIVES THE 1961 SANDWICH WITH LEAK SANDWICH 150 AND LEAK SANDWICH 250
Cambridgeshire-based audio company LEAK, has expanded its product line with two new loudspeaker models, the LEAK Sandwich 150 and LEAK Sandwich 250.
LEAK’s new Sandwich 150 and Sandwich 250 speakers reimagine the iconic LEAK Sandwich design with modern materials and technologies, catering to the demands of modern audio systems while preserving the classic aesthetic that made their predecessors popular in the mid-twentieth-century HiFi scene.
1961 LEAK SANDWICH
These additions draw inspiration from the LEAK Sandwich speaker of 1961, integrating contemporary technologies and materials to create modern incarnations of a classic design.
The original LEAK Sandwich speaker was designed to address a prevalent issue in 1950s loudspeakers insufficient stiffness in cone assemblies. In 1961, LEAK introduced a new solution with a mid/bass drive unit constructed as a ‘sandwich’ of expanded polystyrene foam between two aluminium foil sheets. This design achieved both lightness and extreme stiffness.
NEW MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES
Now, 63 years later, the new Sandwich 150 and Sandwich 250 speakers revisit this concept using advanced materials and manufacturing techniques. The cones feature a stiff outer layer of aluminium bonded to a core of aircraft-grade polymethacrylimide structural foam,

The Sandwich 150 is a two-way design with a textile-dome tweeter and a mid/bass driver, while the Sandwich 250 is a larger three-way model with additional bass and midrange drivers, all featuring Aluminium-Foamcore Sandwich cones. The crossover network blends frequencies, delivering detailed harmonics.
Both speakers come in matched, mirror-imaged pairs optimized for left and right channels, ensuring a precise stereo image and a broad soundstage. The cabinets adopt a ‘sandwich’ construction, incorporating MDF and high-density particleboard layers with strategically placed bracing. Dual rear ports enhance bass response, and precise flaring minimizes ‘chuffing.’ The cabinets are finished in walnut wood veneer, maintaining the classic LEAK appearance while meeting modern expectations.
NEW STAND FOR THE SANDWICH 250
Recognizing the challenge of finding a suitable stand for the larger Sandwich 250, LEAK has introduced a dedicated stand constructed from high-carbon steel with a walnut-veneered base and stainless-steel spikes. This stand ensures the ideal height for seated listening and minimizes vibrations and sound reflections.
