Italian loudspeaker manufacturer Sonus faber has launched a new collection of speakers, Lumina.

The latest collection to emerge from the Vicenza factory, the new three-strong Lumina speaker range is priced from £799. The Lumina collection comprises the Lumina I standmount, a compact bookshelf speaker, the Lumina III floorstander,  and the Lumina Center I.

Lumina

In Latin, ‘Lumina’ means ‘light’, but also a source of energy and life. To Sonus faber, this moniker can be extended to embody three key Lumina design elements.

‘LU’ (luxury sound experience). The first two letters stand for ‘luxury’. This element symbolises Sonus faber’s commitment to deliver a luxurious musical experience, through the company’s longstanding tradition of refined materials and careful craftsmanship.

‘MI’ (minimalist design). The second two letters stand for ‘minimalist’. The principal of minimalism directly captures the essence of the product, which was thoughtfully designed in conjunction with the theory, ‘less is more’.

Italian Design

The new collection comprises the core values of Sonus faber and the materials that identify the brand, such as real multilayer wood and leather, combining them with performance in a simple yet luxurious design. Simplicity remains central to the collection’s identity with its easy set-up, accessible price point and sound performance.

The cabinets are perfectly squared: the designers executed a minimalistic look in order to emphasise the quality of materials used. A careful study of proportions was carried out to guarantee accurate volumes for sound performance and compact dimension for set up.

Lumina’s multilayer wood on the front baffle (and the real-wood veneer) is available in i premium finishes including Walnut and Wengè (both in matte finish with maple inlays), with a third option of Piano Black; all other surfaces of the cabinet are  hand-covered in the company’s  black leather.

The chrome rings around the drivers highlight shapes and proportions and give brightness to the front baffle while outlining the Voice of Sonus faber. Luminas are also provided with two pairs of nickel-plated terminals, allowing for by bi-wiring and bi-amping. Lumina’s crossover features some specially designed Sonus faber-branded high-quality capacitors.

‘NA’ (Natural Sound)

Finally, the last two letters embody the natural sound reproduction and Voice of Sonus faber. The Lumina electro-acoustic project is targeting solutions designed for modern lifestyles and various listening environments, without compromising performance.

Lumina Drive Unit Technology

Lumina uses Sonus faber’s D.A.D. (Damped Apex DomeTM) tweeter, the same used in the company’s Sonetto series, featuring a Kurtmueller hand-coated soft-silk 29mm diaphragm.

The 100mm (4-inch) midrange driver has been freshly developed for the Lumina collection and is specified with a custom-made basket and a cellulose pulp, blended with other natural fibres, diaphragm. The 125mm (5-inch) midrange unit heralds from the Sonetto series and features Sonus faber’s proprietary natural fibre and paper blend air-dried diaphragm.

The 125mm (5-inch) bass units have been designed from scratch for Lumina and also feature a paper pulp cone, for coherence with the rest of the drivers.

Finally, the reflex ports, placed on the frontside of the bookshelf and centre channel and downward-firing on the base of the floorstander, give additional versatility. Thanks to this solution, Lumina speakers are significantly less sensitive to placement.

Lumina And Home Cinema

The Lumina collection features three models offering a balanced solution for traditional stereo enthusiasts as well as those looking to experience a multichannel home cinema system.

Complementing the Lumina range is Sonus faber’s five-strong Gravis series of subwoofers which can be used to augment low frequencies.
