Black Rhodium are a British cable manufacturer that has long championed the use of pure palladium wire in HiFi cables.

They have now released a limited edition version of their Cantata S interconnect, which was released in the summer of 2021, recycling their stock of palladium wire.

PURE PALLADIUM CONDUCTOR WIRE

Graham Nalty of Black Rhodium explains what is behind the choice to use palladium wire in their cable: “All wires sound different when used to carry an audio signal. Our listening tests have demonstrated many times that, as a general rule, more expensive wires give superior sound quality. And the wires that deliver the very best sound are extremely expensive such as the six metals in the ‘Platinum Group’ of Precious Metals. These include palladium, ruthenium, iridium, osmium and rhodium. Palladium is the least expensive metal in the group and is used most in very high-end audio cables. Rhodium is a far more expensive but is used extensively in the plating of audio connectors because of the very small quantity required for plating. Compared with less expensive metals, palladium brings a much more natural presentation to music”.

DEEP CRYOGENIC TREATMENT

Graham also makes use of Deep Cryogenic Treatment of his cables, he says that this treatment re-aligns the molecules in the metal to a much more natural state. This is achieved by slowly cooling the metal to – 186 degrees and slowly returning to room temperature.

DCT++

DCT++ is an addition to Deep Cryogenic Treatment in which the wire is raised in temperature above room temperature as part of the temperature cycle.

CRYSTAL SOUND

The ‘Crystal Sound’ process is an addition to the DCT process in which impurities on the surface of the wire are reduced.

STRAIGHT LINE CONTACT RETURN CONDUCTOR

The use of a ‘Straight Line Contact’ return derives from the work of Keith Eichmann of ‘Bullet Plug’ fame.

THE LIMITED EDITION CANTATA S

In recent years, the price of palladium wire has more than doubled. Black Rhodium has decided to create a Cantata S Limited Edition making use of all the palladium wire that they have, using wire that was purchased some time ago when the price of palladium was much lower than today so that they can pass the price saving on to customers.

Many of the cables in the Cantata Limited Edition have been rebuilt using wire that has been used to build old stock, test cables or cables returned for servicing. Rebuilt cables have been made to shorter, non-standard lengths, due to the fragility of the wire during handling. A small number of New Build cables have also been manufactured, all to a 1m length.
