METAXAS & SINS PAPILLON REEL TO REEL TAPE MACHINE LAUNCH AT HIGH END MUNICH 2022

We first brought you the news of Kostas Metaxas’s GQT portable tape recorder machine in 2018, and then the TR-X followed later that year.

A limited-edition of the Papillion 15” studio reel to reel was announced in the summer of 2020, but since then there has of course been none of the usual major international HiFi Shows at which to launch it.

With the Papillon and its partner, the location recorder Tourbillon, Metaxas & Sins claims to be currently the only company in the world that can produce a  full system from serious concert recording to the highest fidelity playback of that recording.

The Metaxas & Sins Papillon uses horological inspirations is both an audio recording device as well as a masterful work of industrial design.

The Papillon is a 15″ professional studio recorder which can handle tape widths from 1/4″ to 1″ and reels up to 14″ in diameter. Standard professional reel are 10″ 33min at 15ips. Amongst its many innovative features are totally independent “Dual‐Capstans” which are activated by two precision linear motors to make sure the speed across the heads is free of fluctuations and flutter. The Capstan “rollers” are only 4mm in diameter allowing them to spin up to 4‐8 times faster than traditional 8‐10mm diameter Capstan rollers and hence with much higher precision.

MAXON OF SWITZERLAND

The ultra‐hi‐tech BLDC motors from MAXON of Switzerland are totally brushless and the inverse of the traditional high speed‐low torque motors used in the past. BLDC motors come from new developments in electric vehicles. Each of the four precision BLDC motors includes 4096 increment tachometers and are driven by their own microprocessor/MOSFET drivers developed by MAXON before being coordinated by the ARM‐CORTEX main processor.

All rollers and transport parts are machined from 316 Antimagnetic Stainless Steel to ensure extremely long life and are easily accessible for the fine‐tuning of springs and bearings to be able to optimize the sound quality through the individual “voicing” of each machine.
